Zhongshan Slow Living: Paddy Field Cafes to Glowing Ferris Wheels
Read a book surrounded by rice paddies in Zuobu, taste cured meats in Huangpu, and enjoy the city lights over the Qijiang River

Zhongshan perfectly blends the fast and the slow. Find peace in a glass bookstore set in the middle of rice paddies in Zuobu Village, discover authentic Cantonese cured meats in the ancient town of Huangpu, and ride a massive glowing Ferris wheel at Xingzhong Plaza as night falls.
As the hometown of Sun Yat-sen, Zhongshan has always projected a calm and understated charm. It lacks the overwhelming traffic of megacities but offers an incredibly comfortable pace of life. Today, we will take you through Zhongshan's ancient towns, rural villages, and modern commercial districts to experience its unique "slow time."
A Literary Oasis in the Rice Fields: Zuobu Village
Our first stop is Zuobu Village in Nanlang Town. This seemingly ordinary village is actually the ancestral home of Sun Yat-sen. In recent years, Zuobu has become a highly popular destination thanks to its beautiful rural scenery and innovative cultural projects. On the edge of the village lies a vast expanse of rice paddies, and its most eye-catching feature is a glass-walled bookstore built right in the middle of the fields. Order a pour-over coffee, sit inside, and watch the green (or golden) waves of rice swaying in the wind. This tranquility, far from the urban hustle, helps you completely unwind.
The Birthplace of Cantonese Cured Meat: Huangpu Ancient Town
At noon, we head north to Huangpu Ancient Town. As soon as you enter this historic water town, the rich aroma of cured meat fills the air. Huangpu is the birthplace of Cantonese cured meat (Lap Mei), boasting a history of over a century. Walking along the Ming and Qing dynasty-style cobblestone streets, you will see rows of sausages and cured pork hanging from shop eaves and residential roofs. We highly recommend finding an old, traditional restaurant here and ordering a steaming clay pot rice with cured meat. The rich combination of fat, soy sauce, and a hint of liquor soaked into the rice will thoroughly satisfy your taste buds.
Outdoor Thrills in the Mountains: Sanxiang Quanlin Resort
In the afternoon, we travel south to Quanlin Resort in Sanxiang Town. This is a large, comprehensive amusement park nestled between mountains and water. Unlike typical city theme parks, Quanlin's biggest draw is its outdoor adventure activities built into the mountainous terrain. You can drive an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) yourself, navigating through mud and steep slopes for an adrenaline rush. Alternatively, take the cable car straight to the mountaintop for a panoramic view of Sanxiang's lush green forests. It is an excellent place for families and young people to burn off energy on the weekend. The Romantic Eye of the Qijiang River: Xingzhong Plaza
As evening approaches, we return to the city center and visit Xingzhong Plaza in the Shiqi subdistrict. This modern shopping mall built along the Qijiang River features an iconic 108-meter-tall "Magic Color Ferris Wheel." When night falls, the Ferris wheel's neon lights turn on, reflecting beautifully on the river surface. Buy a ticket and step into a cabin; as you slowly rise, you get a 360-degree, unobstructed view of the dazzling city lights along both banks of the Qijiang River, the historic arcade buildings of Sunwen West Road, and the distant bridges. It's a perfectly romantic way to end your slow-living trip in Zhongshan.
These four attractions are spread across different parts of Zhongshan (east, north, south, and central). Renting a car is highly recommended for the best experience. If relying on buses, travel times between towns can be long, so consider splitting this itinerary over two days.
The rice fields in Zuobu Village are most spectacular in autumn (October-November) when the grains turn golden. Huangpu cured meat tastes best in autumn and winter and makes a great souvenir. The ATV ride at Quanlin Resort can get your clothes dirty, so follow the instructors' safety rules. The Xingzhong Plaza Ferris Wheel offers the best night views between 7 PM and 8 PM.
