Zhongshan Craft & Flavors: Mahogany to Tea Snacks

Beyond being the hometown of Sun Yat-sen, Zhongshan hides industrial miracles and profound culinary heritage. From Guzhen's lights and Dayong's mahogany furniture to Sanxiang's traditional "Cha Guo" snacks, this is a deep dive into local craftsmanship and flavors.

When we talk about Zhongshan (historically Xiangshan), its industrial towns and local delicacies are just as fascinating as its historical monuments. Zhongshan has many "specialized towns," each dominating a specific industry nationwide. On this trip, we take you deep into the townships to experience the city's craftsmanship and down-to-earth vibe.

Lighting up China: Guzhen & Dayong

First, we arrive at Guzhen Town, hailed as the "Lighting Capital of China," which holds a 70% share of the national lighting market. If you arrive at dusk, a stroll down the kilometers-long "Ten-Mile Lighting Street" is a must. Inside the massive showrooms, ranging from ultra-luxurious giant crystal chandeliers to high-tech smart lighting, the dazzling displays make you feel like you've entered a massive museum of light. Next, we drive to Dayong Town, China's capital of mahogany furniture. Walking into the Dayong Mahogany Furniture Expo, the air is filled with the faint scent of premium wood. Here, you can admire priceless rosewood furniture and observe how craftsmen use ancient mortise-and-tenon joints to assemble solid wood into exquisite art pieces without a single nail.

Heritage Flavors in Sanxiang: Cha Guo & Rice Noodles

After marveling at the craftsmanship, it's time to treat your taste buds in Sanxiang Town in southern Zhongshan. As a historical intersection of Hakka and Cantonese people, it birthed a unique traditional snack called "Cha Guo" (Tea Snacks). Walking down Sanxiang's traditional food street, you'll see various pastries made of glutinous rice and plant juices. Though they look rustic, they are incredibly chewy, sweet, and full of nostalgic rural flavor. Beside Cha Guo, you must try an authentic bowl of "Sanxiang Lai Fun" (rice noodles). Soaked in a rich pork bone broth and topped with roast goose or BBQ pork, it's an absolutely satisfying meal.

Summer Family Fun: Changjiang Water World

After a hearty meal, if you are visiting during the hot summer, we recommend heading to Changjiang Water World in the East District. This is a large deep-sea-themed water park whose biggest highlight is the use of high-quality natural water from the Changjiang Reservoir. With towering thrilling slides, a massive wave pool, and a fairy-tale water fortress for kids, screaming and laughing through the splashes is the perfect way to beat the southern heat and conclude your rich Zhongshan trip.

實用交通及通關指引 (Transit & Border Guide)

Guzhen and Dayong are connected to the city center by bus, but due to the distances between towns, driving is highly recommended. Sanxiang is near the Zhuhai border; take express buses like K09 from downtown. Changjiang Water World is in the city center and easily reached by taxi.

小編在地避坑貼士 (Curator Insider Tips)

While Guzhen's showrooms focus on wholesale, many welcome tourists to browse and take photos; just be careful around expensive fragile items. Sanxiang Cha Guo is made of glutinous rice and is very filling; best shared among a group. The Water World is open from May to October; bring sunscreen and waterproof phone bags.
