Karst Peaks & Inkstones: Zhaoqing's Ecological and Heritage Journey
Explore Dinghu Mountain, Seven Star Crags, and the 1,000-Year-Old Inkstone Village
As the Greater Bay Area's largest yet most ecologically preserved city, Zhaoqing offers stunning karst landscapes, the ancient forests of Dinghu, and the masterful craftsmanship of Duan Inkstones.
Amidst the urban density of the Greater Bay Area, Zhaoqing (historically known as Duanzhou) shines like an unpolished emerald. As a cradle of Lingnan culture, it seamlessly merges majestic karst landscapes, pristine forests, and intangible cultural heritage. For those seeking a serene escape from the concrete jungle, Zhaoqing is the ultimate weekend destination.
Stop 1: Seven Star Crags – A Miniature Guilin
Your first stop in the city center should be the Seven Star Crags. Comprising seven limestone peaks arranged like the Big Dipper over the vast Star Lake, it has been hailed as the "First Wonder of Lingnan" for centuries. Unlike remote karst regions, this wonder is easily accessible right in the city. Rent a bamboo raft to glide through cool, water-filled limestone caves, or stroll along the Star Lake greenway at sunset for breathtaking mirrored reflections.
Stop 2: Dinghu Mountain – The Emerald on the Tropic of Cancer
If Seven Star Crags is dynamic water, Dinghu Mountain is profound greenery. As China's first National Nature Reserve, it boasts off-the-charts negative ion levels. Take the shuttle bus midway up the mountain and hike to the famous Feishui Pool (Flying Water Pool). A spectacular waterfall cascades from dozens of meters high, creating a natural, refreshing mist. While in the mountains, visit Qingyun Temple, one of Lingnan's four great Buddhist temples, and taste the legendary local mountain-spring tofu pudding.
Stop 3: Baishi Village & Duan Inkstone Craftsmanship
Zhaoqing is synonymous with the Duan Inkstone, the most prestigious of China's Four Great Inkstones. Located in the Duanzhou District, Baishi Village is a 1,000-year-old settlement dedicated to this craft. Walking down its cobblestone alleys, the rhythmic tapping of chisels echoes from every courtyard. Highly prized by emperors and scholars for its ability to preserve moisture and protect the brush, the Duan Inkstone is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Visitors can watch artisans transform raw rock through meticulous carving and polishing into exquisite art pieces. A small inkstone makes for the ultimate cultural souvenir.
High-Speed Rail directly connects Hong Kong West Kowloon to Zhaoqing East Station in about 1.5 hours. Ride-hailing apps are convenient for navigating between Seven Star Crags and Baishi Village in the city center.
Dinghu Mountain is expansive and steep; it is highly recommended to purchase the 20 RMB shuttle bus ticket. Bring mosquito repellent and comfortable hiking shoes, especially in summer.
