Zhaoqing's Karst Canvas: Seven Star Crags & Song Walls
Find the "Little Guilin" of the GBA and the hometown of China's finest inkstones
Zhaoqing is the only city in the GBA with typical karst topography. It boasts the Seven Star Crags (rivaling Guilin) and Dinghu Mountain (the "Emerald"), alongside a thousand-year-old Song Dynasty city wall and profound inkstone culture.
If you have high expectations for natural scenery in the GBA, Zhaoqing will not disappoint. Located in mid-western Guangdong, this city perfectly combines stunning landscapes with weighty historical culture, creating a three-dimensional Lingnan scroll painting.
The Number One Wonder of Lingnan: Seven Star Crags & Dinghu Mountain
Zhaoqing's natural landscapes are centered around the Xinghu Scenic Area, divided into two distinct parts. First are the Seven Star Crags right in the city center. Hailed as the "Number One Wonder of Lingnan," seven steep limestone peaks are arranged like the Big Dipper, scattered across a calm lake. Renting a small boat here allows you to simultaneously experience the "bizarre mountains of Guilin" and the "soft waters of Hangzhou." Next, we drive to the suburban Dinghu Mountain. This is China's first national nature reserve, dubbed the "Emerald on the Tropic of Cancer." It features towering ancient trees, cascading waterfalls, and incredibly high negative ion concentrations. Listening to the echoing bells at Qingyun Temple on the mountain is an excellent spiritual cleanse.
The Millennium Song City and the Legend of Duan Inkstones
Beyond nature, Zhaoqing (historically known as Duanzhou) has a profound historical heritage. Returning to the city, we climb the Zhaoqing Ancient City Wall. This is the only intact Song Dynasty brick city wall left in Guangdong. Walking along this 2.8km wall, you can touch bricks that have been repaired through the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with different dynastic stamps still visible. Standing on the Piyun Tower at dusk, overlooking the city and the West River, evokes a deep sense of historical vicissitudes.
Zhaoqing's other cultural calling card is the "Duan Inkstone" (Duan Yan). As the finest of China's Four Great Inkstones, it has been highly revered by scholars and calligraphers since the Tang Dynasty. We visit the Duan Inkstone Culture Village, home to numerous intangible heritage masters. You can watch up close as master carvers meticulously chisel beautiful inkstones based on the natural veins of the rock. Whether as an art collection or a souvenir, a Duan inkstone is the most valuable memento of your Zhaoqing trip.
Zhaoqing is highly accessible. Take the high-speed rail to Zhaoqing East Station, or the Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoqing Intercity Railway directly to Zhaoqing Station (right across from Seven Star Crags). The city wall and crags are close and can be biked; Dinghu Mountain is about 20km away, best reached by taxi or dedicated bus.
Seven Star Crags is massive; buying a sightseeing cart or boat ticket is recommended. Butterfly Valley in Dinghu Mountain requires an extra boat ticket but offers excellent views. When buying Duan inkstones, note that the stone pit origin (e.g., Old Pit, Mazi Pit) drastically affects the price; buy from reputable shops and ask for certificates.
