Zhaoqing's Ancient Code: Fengkai to Swallow Rock

Zhaoqing is more than just the Seven Star Crags. Hidden in its outer counties are the stunning Fengkai Geopark, the swifts of Huaiji Swallow Rock, and the architectural marvel of Deqing School Palace. Join us on a magical journey through Guangdong's karst landscapes.

When people think of Zhaoqing, the downtown Seven Star Crags and Dinghu Mountain usually come to mind. But if you venture further into the counties of Fengkai, Deqing, and Huaiji, you'll find the Greater Bay Area's most magnificent karst landscapes and oldest architectural miracles. This is a deep exploration for outdoor lovers and history buffs.

Guangdong's Little Guilin: Fengkai Geopark

Our first stop is the Fengkai National Geopark near the Guangdong-Guangxi border. Sharing the same geographical veins as Guilin, it features endless karst peaks shrouded in mist. The most shocking sight is the "Number One Stone under Heaven"—the Giant Stone (Banshi). It is a single, massive, seamless granite rock standing 191 meters tall and 1,350 meters long. From afar, it looks like a giant screen dropped from the sky, glistening with colorful stripes in the sunlight.

A Carnival of Canyons and Forests: Panlong Gorge

Leaving Fengkai, we drive to the Panlong Gorge Eco-Tourism Area in Deqing County. It boasts some of the most spectacular waterfall clusters in Guangdong. Water plunges down cliffs, filling the air with high concentrations of negative ions. In summer, you must try the thrilling canyon rafting, navigating through rushing streams and dense primeval forests. In spring and autumn, massive fields of lavender bloom in the valley, adding a touch of French romance to this wild landscape.

An Architectural Miracle: Deqing School Palace

After enjoying the natural beauty, we head to Deqing county town to visit Deqing School Palace (Confucius Temple), one of the oldest standing Confucius temples in the Lingnan region, dating back nearly a thousand years to the Northern Song Dynasty. Its main hall, the Dacheng Hall, features an astonishing design: its four main pillars do not reach the roof. Instead, a complex system of brackets (dougong) distributes the roof's weight. This "pillars not touching the roof" wooden structure is extremely rare in Chinese architectural history—a perfect blend of mechanics and aesthetics.

A Swarm of Swifts: Huaiji Swallow Rock (Yanyan)

Our final stop is Yanyan (Swallow Rock) in Huaiji County. This massive karst cave cuts straight through a mountain. Every spring and summer, hundreds of thousands of Golden Swifts fly in from southern islands to build their nests. Yanyan is the only inland area in China that produces bird's nest (for culinary use). Walking into the dark cave and looking up at the ceiling tens of meters high, you will see dense swarms of swifts flying and hear their calls echoing alongside the underground river—a truly awe-inspiring display of nature's raw power.

實用交通及通關指引 (Transit & Border Guide)

Fengkai, Deqing, and Huaiji are remote counties with limited public transport. Renting a car in downtown Zhaoqing or Guangzhou is highly recommended. The sites are far apart, so plan a 2-3 day trip. There is a high-speed rail station ("Huaiji Station") near Yanyan, but a taxi is still needed to reach the cave.

小編在地避坑貼士 (Curator Insider Tips)

The best time to see the Giant Stone is right after it rains when its colors are most vibrant. Panlong Gorge rafting guarantees you will get wet; bring a change of clothes. The relics in Deqing School Palace are precious; do not touch the wood carvings. The best season to see the swifts at Yanyan is from May to July; bring binoculars.
