Shenzhen West Coast: Mega-Structures to Millennium Villages

As Shenzhen expands westward, the Bao'an and Qianhai districts are seeing explosive growth. Marvel at the wave-like Bay Opera and the massive Shenzhen World Exhibition Center, then step back in time at the Shekou Sea World cruise ship and the 1,000-year-old Shajing Ancient Fair.

If your impression of Shenzhen is limited to the financial district of Futian or the tech hubs of Nanshan, it's time to look west. Driven by the Greater Bay Area initiative, the Bao'an and Qianhai districts are undergoing massive transformations with world-class mega-structures rising from the ground. On this journey, we witness the modern miracles of western Shenzhen and seek out ancient corners forgotten by time.

An Arts Temple Resembling Waves: Bay Opera of Shenzhen

Our first stop is Oh Bay in Bao'an District. Besides the iconic ferris wheel, the most striking feature here is the Bay Opera of Shenzhen. Designed by Pritzker-winning architect Christian de Portzamparc, the building's exterior flows like ocean waves, perfectly blending into the coastal landscape. Inside, the sweeping, wooden concert hall meets world-class acoustic standards. Even if you don't attend a concert, its futuristic exterior is a prime spot for architectural photography.

The World's Largest: Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center

Moving north along the coast near the Bao'an Airport, we arrive at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center. As one of the largest exhibition centers globally, its sheer scale is mind-boggling. The colorful, undulating roof stretches for kilometers, resembling a giant dragon resting in the geographical center of the Greater Bay Area. The interior facilities are highly futuristic. If a major tech or cultural expo is on, we highly recommend spending half a day here to feel the hardware prowess of "World Factory 2.0."

International Romance: Shekou Sea World

As evening approaches, we head south to Shekou in Nanshan District. Sea World is Shenzhen's earliest international leisure zone. Its soul is the "Minghua," a retired French luxury cruise ship permanently docked in the center of the plaza. Today, it is surrounded by countless international restaurants, craft beer bars, and cafes. When night falls, the musical fountain in front of the ship dances to the lights, shooting water tens of meters into the air. Grab a beer, sit on an open terrace, and soak in Shekou's unique, inclusive expat vibe.

A Time Capsule: Shajing Ancient Fair

For our final stop, we return to Bao'an to find a place that completely contradicts high-tech Shenzhen: the Shajing Ancient Fair. Hidden among the factories and skyscrapers of Bao'an is this 1,000-year-old village. Shajing is the birthplace of the famous "Shajing Oyster." Walking through the narrow ancient alleys, you'll see unique walls made of oyster shells mixed with yellow mud—sturdy and naturally insulating. Today, some old houses have been revitalized into cultural spaces, but the village retains a raw, uncommercialized Lingnan atmosphere. Finishing the trip with an authentic oyster feast here is the perfect wrap-up.

小編在地避坑貼士 (Curator Insider Tips)

The Bay Opera looks stunning at night when illuminated alongside the ferris wheel. The World Exhibition Center is massive; wear comfortable walking shoes if attending an event. Sea World's musical fountain has scheduled evening performances. Shajing Ancient Fair is not highly commercialized; please respect the locals living there.
