Shenzhen's Urban Oases: From Lianhuashan to the Mangroves
Overlook the CBD from Futian's best balcony and birdwatch along the Nanshan coast
Known as the "City of a Thousand Parks," Shenzhen masterfully blends nature into its concrete jungle. Hike up Lianhuashan to overlook the Futian CBD, watch migratory birds at the Shenzhen Bay Mangroves, hike Nanshan for coastal night views, and release stress at Happy Valley theme park.
In the minds of many, Shenzhen is a steel forest made up of skyscrapers, tech giants, and a fast-paced lifestyle. However, Shenzhen is actually a veritable "City of a Thousand Parks," where mountains, coastlines, and urban architecture interweave perfectly. Today, we take you into Shenzhen's urban oases to find moments of tranquility and wild nature right in the bustling city center.
The Best Balcony in Futian CBD: Lianhuashan Park
Our first stop is Lianhuashan Park in the center of Futian District. This park doesn't have towering peaks, yet it is the most popular leisure spot for Shenzhen residents. Walking up the gentle trail for about 20 minutes brings you to the summit plaza. Here stands a bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping. From the viewing platform at the edge of the plaza, you have an unobstructed, head-on view of the majestic central axis of the Futian CBD and its dense cluster of skyscrapers, right behind the Civic Center. Especially at night, when the light shows on the buildings light up, the visual impact here is absolutely world-class.
A Symphony of Birds and Sea Views: Shenzhen Bay Mangrove Reserve
Leaving Lianhuashan, we head south to the Shenzhen Bay Mangrove Nature Reserve on the coast. This is the only national nature reserve located within a city center in China. Cycling or strolling along the incredibly wide coastal promenade, you have lush mangroves and mudflats on one side—which attract hundreds of thousands of migratory birds every autumn and winter—and the shimmering Shenzhen Bay on the other, with Yuen Long in Hong Kong clearly visible across the water. In the cool sea breeze, watching egrets soar over the water makes you completely forget you are in a megacity of 20 million people.
The Highest Point Overlooking Qianhai Bay: Nanshan Park
In the afternoon, we head to Nanshan District to challenge a hike up Nanshan Park (Dananshan). Dananshan forms a natural barrier in western Shenzhen. Although its elevation is only over 300 meters, its location right next to the coastline provides excellent views. Climbing up the stone steps will make you sweat, but the reward at the top is unparalleled. Standing at the summit, you can take in the skyscrapers of the Qianhai Free Trade Zone, the busy Shekou port, and the Shenzhen Bay Bridge crossing the sea. It is also a favorite spot for young people in Shenzhen to go "night hiking," where the city lights twinkle like stars.
Carnival in the City Center: Happy Valley Shenzhen
If you feel that pure natural landscapes lack excitement, then for your final stop, head to Happy Valley in OCT (Overseas Chinese Town). As the birthplace of the national Happy Valley brand, this large theme park hidden in the city center cleverly uses the urban terrain to combine roller coasters and drop towers with dense vegetation. Whether it's riding the "Snow Mountain Flying Dragon" for extreme speed or jumping into the Maya Water Park during the hot summer, this is the best place to release urban stress and rediscover childlike joy.
Lianhuashan Park and Happy Valley are in the city center with direct subway access (Children's Palace Station and Window of the World Station, respectively). For the Mangroves, take Line 9 to Shenzhen Bay Park Station, which exits right at the sea. Nanshan Park has multiple entrances; taking a taxi to the Bieshu Road entrance is recommended for the hike.
Lianhuashan Park is crowded on weekends; go in the early morning or evening. The best birdwatching season at the Mangroves is from November to March; bring binoculars and keep quiet. If night hiking Dananshan, bring a flashlight and go with a group. Happy Valley's water park is only open in summer; ensure you are fit for thrill rides.
