Huizhou's Peaks & Bays: Taoist Trails to Azure Seas
Forest oxygen bars on the left, invincible sea views on the right
Huizhou is one of the most ecologically rich cities in the GBA. With famous Taoist mountains and bamboo seas in the north, and dozens of kilometers of white beaches in the south, this is the ultimate nature healing journey.
If you're looking for a destination in the Greater Bay Area that offers both profound historical mountains and top-tier coastal resorts, Huizhou is the premier choice. The city maximizes the charms of both mountains and seas, making it the perfect sanctuary from high-pressure urban life.
Seeking the Immortals: Luofu and Nankun Mountains
The journey begins in the northern Boluo County at Luofu Mountain. Known as the "First Mountain of Lingnan," it is one of China's top ten famous Taoist mountains. Ge Hong, a famous Eastern Jin Dynasty Taoist scholar and alchemist, practiced here. Climbing Luofu Mountain not only offers waterfalls and bizarre rock formations but also a visit to the ancient Chongxu Temple, rich in Taoist and traditional Chinese medicine culture. If you prefer a pure forest retreat, the nearby Nankun Mountain Eco-Tourism Area is perfect. Dubbed the "Oasis on the Tropic of Cancer," it features tens of thousands of acres of pristine bamboo forests. In summer, temperatures are significantly cooler than in the city, and the high-end hot spring resorts hidden deep in the mountains offer total relaxation.
China's Maldives: Xunliao Bay and Daya Bay
After soaking up negative ions in the forests, we drive south straight to the South China Sea. Xunliao Bay in Huidong County is often praised as the "Maldives of China" for its crystal-clear waters and fine sand, boasting over 20 kilometers of white beaches. In recent years, it has developed rapidly, now home to numerous five-star international resorts, yacht clubs, and sailing bases. You can charter a yacht to head out to sea or simply enjoy a romantic seafood dinner on the beach.
Adjacent to Xunliao Bay is the Daya Bay Golden Coast, which offers a different coastal vibe. The most popular activity here is riding the Wushantou Greenway. Rent a bicycle and pedal along this coastal greenway built into the hillside—with lush green mountains on your left and the sparkling azure sea on your right. The sea breeze on your face is the most priceless sense of freedom Huizhou can give you.
Huizhou's natural attractions are widely dispersed; driving is highly recommended. Driving from downtown Shenzhen to Luofu or Nankun Mountain takes about 1.5 - 2 hours, and to Xunliao Bay or Daya Bay takes about 1.5 hours. If taking the high-speed rail, alight at Huidong Station and take a taxi to the beach.
Xunliao Bay suffers from severe traffic jams on summer weekends; visit on weekdays or check in on a Friday. The mountain roads to Nankun Mountain are winding; drive carefully and prepare motion sickness medicine if needed. UV radiation is extremely strong on the coast, so use ample sun protection.
