Metropolitan Art and Wild Trails: West Kowloon and the MacLehose
From M+ Museum Masterpieces to UNESCO Geoparks
Hong Kong is far more than a financial hub. Discover its dual soul through the avant-garde art of the West Kowloon Cultural District and the breathtaking coastal hikes of the MacLehose Trail.
While many associate Hong Kong strictly with shopping and the Victoria Harbour skyline, the city has recently asserted unparalleled global influence in two distinct areas: contemporary art and outdoor ecology. Whether you are a culture enthusiast or an adventure seeker, Hong Kong offers world-class experiences.
West Kowloon Cultural District: Asia's Art Engine
Situated on the waterfront, the West Kowloon Cultural District is now the most vital arts hub in the Greater Bay Area. Its centerpiece, the M+ Museum, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is an architectural marvel shaped like an inverted 'T'. It houses a vast collection of visual art, design, and moving images. Just a short walk away, the Hong Kong Palace Museum uses modern architectural language to reinterpret traditional Chinese aesthetics, displaying priceless artifacts from Beijing's Forbidden City. Spending a day museum-hopping here, followed by a sunset stroll along the promenade, is the ultimate urban cultural experience.
MacLehose Trail: A World-Class Coastal Hike
If you crave an escape, Hong Kong's country parks are shockingly beautiful. Named one of the world's 20 best hiking trails by National Geographic, the 100-kilometer MacLehose Trail is legendary. For visitors, Stages 1 and 2 in Sai Kung are highly recommended. This route takes you through a UNESCO Global Geopark, where you will witness the imposing hexagonal volcanic rock columns at the High Island Reservoir East Dam. Continuing over the hills reveals hidden gems like Long Ke Wan and Ham Tin Wan—pristine beaches with powder-white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters that rival the top islands of Southeast Asia.
To reach West Kowloon, take the MTR to Kowloon Station and walk. To access the MacLehose Trail, head to Sai Kung Town and transfer to bus 94 or a taxi to the starting point at Pak Tam Chung.
Special exhibition tickets for M+ and the Palace Museum sell out fast; book online two weeks in advance. The MacLehose Trail has very few supply points—bring plenty of water, snacks, and wear proper hiking gear.
