Hong Kong Day & Night: Blue House to Temple Street

Hong Kong is not just a financial center full of skyscrapers; it also preserves rich historical architecture and grassroots culture. Visit the bright Blue House in Wan Chai, enjoy a beer at Murray House in Stanley, and experience authentic local life under the neon lights of Temple Street Night Market.

As an international metropolis, Hong Kong always presents a fascinating contrast between modern and traditional. When you want a break from the glass facades of Central and the laser shows of Victoria Harbour, follow our guide to explore the local neighborhoods and the southern coastline to find historic buildings and grassroots nightlife that carry the collective memories of Hong Kong people.

Traces of Time in Wan Chai: The Blue House

Our first stop is Stone Nullah Lane in Wan Chai, home to the Blue House, a Lingnan-style tenement building (tong lau) painted in a striking bright blue. Built in the 1920s, it once housed a martial arts school run by the nephew of legendary master Wong Fei-hung, and later served as a free school and clinic. The Blue House not only retains its wooden stairs and balconies but is also famous for its "Retain House, Retain Residents" conservation project, meaning old residents still live upstairs. On the ground floor, the "Hong Kong House of Stories" exhibits vintage items, offering a glimpse into the real lives of early grassroots citizens.

Joyful Memories Between Mountains and Sea: Ocean Park

Leaving Wan Chai, we take a bus through the tunnel to the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. For many locals, Ocean Park Hong Kong holds unforgettable childhood memories. Built along the mountain and coastline, the theme park is divided into the Waterfront and the Summit. You can take the iconic cable car over the mountain, enjoying unbeatable ocean views, before experiencing thrilling roller coasters and drop towers at the top. Alternatively, get close to rare animals at the Jellyfish Kaleidoscope and the Giant Panda Adventure for a fun-filled afternoon.

Colonial Charm by the Sea: Murray House in Stanley

In the late afternoon, we continue south to the exotic Stanley waterfront. Here stands the 160-year-old Victorian-era Murray House. Originally located in Central, this building—featuring Western granite columns and Chinese tile roofs—was dismantled due to urban development and miraculously rebuilt brick-by-brick in Stanley. Find a restaurant under its wide corridors, order a cold beer, feel the sea breeze, and watch the white sailboats in the bay; it feels just like a vacation in a European seaside town.

The Grassroots Nightclub: Temple Street Night Market

As night falls, we cross back to the Kowloon Peninsula and step into the famous Temple Street Night Market in Yau Ma Tei. The backdrop for countless Hong Kong triad movies, it is often called the "poor man's nightclub." Neon signs flash on both sides of the street, while stalls sell cheap clothing and vintage toys. The true essence of Temple Street lies in its lively atmosphere: get your fortune told by a street diviner, listen to open-air Cantonese opera, and finally sit down at a roadside food stall (dai pai dong). Order a steaming clay pot rice (bo zai fan) with a crispy crust at the bottom, paired with a deep-fried oyster omelet—this is the most authentic Hong Kong nightlife.

實用交通及通關指引 (Transit & Border Guide)

The Blue House is a 10-minute walk from Wan Chai MTR Station. Take the South Island Line to Ocean Park Station for the theme park. For Murray House, take bus 6, 6X, or 260 from Exchange Square in Central (the scenic route passes Repulse Bay). Temple Street is located between Jordan and Yau Ma Tei MTR stations.
