Guangzhou Panyu: Safari Adventures & Ancient Water Towns

Panyu, the vast southern district of Guangzhou, is not only home to Asia's top Chimelong Safari Park but also hides cultural treasures like Shawan Ancient Town and Baomo Garden. This is the ultimate itinerary blending family fun with Lingnan aesthetics.
If you only stay in Zhujiang New Town or the old Yuexiu district when visiting Guangzhou, you will miss the city's most family-friendly southern wing: Panyu District. Panyu is not just a cradle of Lingnan culture; it also boasts world-class theme parks. On this journey, we switch seamlessly between wild adventures and ancient charm.
The Wild Kingdom: Chimelong Safari Park
Our first stop is Panyu's crown jewel: Chimelong Safari Park. As Asia's largest wildlife park, its standout feature is the massive free-range areas. We highly recommend taking the free semi-open safari train right after entering. You'll weave through Australian forests and African savannas, with giraffes and zebras walking just an arm's length away. Afterward, take the aerial cable car for a bird's-eye view of the animal kingdom. Home to the world's largest population of white tigers and adorable giant pandas, this is an absolute must-do for families.
Sweet Water Town Days: Shawan Ancient Town
After the wild thrill of Chimelong, we drive to the 800-year-old Shawan Ancient Town. Unlike the water towns of Jiangnan, Shawan preserves a massive amount of Cantonese-style Ming and Qing architecture. Walking on the flagstone streets, you'll see unique walls made of oyster shells and exquisite brick carvings. A trip to Shawan is incomplete without trying its traditional dessert. Find a historic shop and order an authentic "Shawan Ginger Milk Curd" (Jiang Mai Nai). The rich ginger spice perfectly blended with sweet water buffalo milk creates a taste of old Guangzhou you'll never forget.
The Pinnacle of Lingnan Gardens: Baomo Garden
Not far from Shawan is the magnificent Baomo Garden. This is a massive, royal-style garden that combines Lingnan classical architecture, Pearl River water town features, and a tribute to the ancient honest official, Lord Bao. The garden features winding corridors, arched stone bridges, and intricately carved wooden pavilions. The biggest hit with kids, however, is the tens of thousands of giant koi fish swimming in the crystal-clear lakes. Buying a packet of fish food and watching the colorful frenzy is a visually stunning experience.
2,000 Years of Chiseling: Lotus Hill
Our final stop is Lotus Hill (Lianhuashan) in eastern Panyu. Its most famous landmark is the 40-meter-tall golden statue of Guanyin facing the Shiziyang channel, radiating solemnity. But the truly awe-inspiring part of Lotus Hill is its hidden "Nanyue Kingdom Ancient Quarry Ruins." Over 2,000 years ago, ancients mined red sandstone here, leaving behind bizarre rock formations, caves, and sheer cliffs that form a giant stone maze. Walking between "Swallow Rock" and "Flying Eagle Cliff," you will feel a profound reverence for both ancient human craftsmanship and the erosive power of nature.
Chimelong Safari is directly accessible via MTR Line 3/7 at "Hanxi Chimelong Station." Shawan and Baomo Garden are further from the subway; taking a taxi or local bus within Panyu is recommended. Lotus Hill can be reached by taking MTR Line 4 to "Shiqi Station" and transferring to a bus. Driving is the most convenient way to explore Panyu.
Chimelong is massive; grab a map and plan your train and cable car rides early to avoid the midday rush. Shawan Town is free to walk around, but internal exhibition halls require a combo ticket. Baomo Garden gets very hot in summer, so late afternoon visits are best. Watch out for falling rocks at the Lotus Hill quarry and do not enter restricted zones.
