Guangzhou's Central Axis: A 2,000-Year Time Travel

Guangzhou is not just a bustling metropolis; it is a national historical city with over 2,200 years of history. Follow the traditional central axis to explore a 2,000-year-old underground palace, find the Five Rams legend in Yuexiu Park, and marvel at the majestic Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the red walls of the Peasant Movement Institute.

When people are dazzled by the skyscrapers in Zhujiang New Town, they often overlook Guangzhou's profound historical heritage. As the center of Lingnan culture and the birthplace of the Maritime Silk Road, Guangzhou's traditional central axis is packed with historical ruins from various dynasties. Today, let's slow down and take a day to travel from the Western Han Dynasty to the Republic of China era, decoding the 2,000-year history of the "City of Rams."

The Shock of an Underground Palace: Mausoleum of the Nanyue King

Our first stop is the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King on Jiefang North Road. This museum is built directly over the actual tomb of Zhao Mo, the second king of the Nanyue Kingdom during the Western Han Dynasty. It is the largest and best-preserved color-painted stone chamber tomb of the Han Dynasty in the Lingnan region. Walking into the cool underground tomb, you can closely observe its structure. The excavated artifacts displayed in the museum are breathtaking, the most famous being the "Silk-Threaded Jade Garment" made of 2,291 pieces of jade, showcasing the extreme luxury and high craftsmanship of the region over 2,000 years ago.

The Origin of the City of Rams: Yuexiu Park

Leaving the museum, we walk into Yuexiu Park right across the street. This is the largest comprehensive park in downtown Guangzhou and a microcosm of the city's history. Strolling through the lush greenery, you will find Guangzhou's most famous city emblem: the "Five Rams Sculpture." Legend has it that five immortals riding five rams holding ears of grain descended upon Guangzhou to bless the land with eternal harvests—hence the nicknames "City of Rams" and "City of Spikes." In addition to the sculpture, the park preserves a section of the weathered Ming Dynasty city wall and the Zhenhai Tower (Guangzhou Museum), making it the best place to understand the city's development.

A Masterpiece of Republican Architecture: Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

In the afternoon, we head south to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall on Dongfeng Middle Road. Built to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, this majestic building was designed by Lu Yanzhi, a famous modern Chinese architect. The exterior features an octagonal palace-style design with a roof covered in sapphire-blue glazed tiles that glitter in the sun. The most amazing part is its internal structure: using advanced architectural mechanics, the designer created an auditorium capable of holding over 3,000 people without a single pillar blocking the view. It is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a hall that witnessed countless major historical events in modern China.

The "Little Forbidden City": Peasant Movement Institute

Our final stop is the Peasant Movement Institute on Zhongshan 4th Road. Originally built as the Panyu Academy (a Confucian temple) during the Ming Dynasty, it features red walls, yellow tiles, and flying eaves, set against towering ancient trees in the courtyard. The majestic atmosphere has earned it the nickname "Guangzhou's Little Forbidden City" among young locals. In the 1920s, it served as a training ground for peasant movement leaders. Today, not only is it an important historical education base, but its classical aesthetic also makes it a highly popular hidden gem for photography, especially for those wearing traditional Hanfu clothing.

These four attractions are all located along the traditional central axis in Yuexiu District and are very close to each other. From the south gate of Yuexiu Park, it is a 10-minute walk to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station, Line 2). From there, a 10-minute taxi or subway ride will take you to the Peasant Movement Institute (Peasant Movement Institute Station, Line 1).

小編在地避坑貼士 (Curator Insider Tips)

The underground tomb at the Nanyue King Museum is cool and dimly lit; watch your step. Yuexiu Park is massive, so consider taking the park's electric shuttle to save energy. The grounds of the Memorial Hall are free, but a 10 RMB ticket is required to enter the main auditorium. The Peasant Movement Institute is closed on Mondays; its red walls make a perfect backdrop for wearing light-colored clothes or traditional Hanfu.
