Guangzhou's Iron and Softness: From Huangpu Academy to Hot Springs
Cross the east and north of Guangzhou to explore modern history and soak in world-class radon hot springs

Guangzhou's territory is vast. Head east to Changzhou Island to feel the weight of modern history at the Huangpu Military Academy and cycle through Shenjing Village. Then, drive north to conquer the magnificent Baishuizhai Waterfall, and finally, relax in Conghua's rare radon hot springs.
While most tourists focus on the Canton Tower or the dazzling night views of Zhujiang New Town, the eastern and northern suburbs of Guangzhou hide completely different scenery. Here you will find both a military holy land that shaped modern Chinese history and natural wonders surrounded by mountains. Today, we take you on a cross-district journey from iron-blooded history to soothing nature.
The Cradle of Modern History: Huangpu Military Academy and Changzhou Island
Our first stop is Changzhou Island, located on the Pearl River in eastern Guangzhou. This island is shaded by trees and covered with orchards, making it a favorite weekend getaway for locals seeking a slower pace of life. The most famous landmark on the island is the Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy. Founded in 1924, this academy produced countless generals who shaped modern Chinese history. Walking among the mottled white walls and grey tiles, looking at the famous motto—"Those who seek promotion and wealth should go elsewhere; those who fear death should not enter this gate"—you can still feel the passion of the revolutionary youth. Afterward, rent a bike to ride to the island's Shenjing Ancient Village and try their famous roast goose.
Conquering the 9,999 Steps: Zengcheng Baishuizhai
On day two, we drive northeast to the Baishuizhai Scenic Area in Zengcheng District. This area boasts the waterfall with the largest drop in mainland China: the Baishuixian Waterfall. Cascading from the mountain peak, it looks like a fairy in a white dress, creating an incredibly majestic sight. The most famous challenge here is the "No.1 Staircase of Southern Heaven," a hiking trail consisting of 9,999 stone steps. Depending on your stamina, you can hike up to the 1,499th step (Puming Platform) to feel the spray of the falls up close, or challenge yourself to reach the summit for a panoramic view of the mountains. It is a fantastic outdoor route for fresh air.
Ultimate Relaxation: Conghua Hot Springs
After the physical challenge of Baishuizhai, we continue north to Guangzhou's "backyard"—Conghua District. The Conghua Hot Spring Scenic Area is hailed as the "No.1 Spring in Lingnan." It is one of only two rare radon hot springs in the world (the other being in Switzerland). The Liuxi River flows through the town, which is surrounded by mountains on both sides. On a chilly autumn or winter day, soaking your tired body in the mineral-rich hot water while breathing the crisp mountain air is one of life's greatest pleasures. In the evening, try local specialties like clay-baked chicken and mountain stream snails in the hot spring town to round off a perfect trip.
Changzhou Island (Huangpu Military Academy) can be reached by Guangzhou Metro or by taking a water bus (ferry) from downtown, which is a great experience. Baishuizhai and Conghua are far north (over 70 km from downtown). Renting a car is the most convenient option, though tourist express buses from downtown bus stations are also available.
Real-name reservations must be made in advance via the official WeChat account to visit the Huangpu Military Academy; it is closed on Mondays. Baishuizhai has many stairs, so wear comfortable sports shoes and bring plenty of water. Conghua has many hot spring resorts of varying quality; choose a reputable, large resort to ensure good water quality.
