Foshan's Heritage and Rebirth: From a 600-Year-Old Dragon Boat to a Chic Wharf

Foshan is more than just martial arts and the Ancestral Temple. Travel to Nanhai to find a nearly 600-year-old dragon boat, then head to Shunde's Ronggui to see how an abandoned food factory was transformed into the city's trendiest riverside cultural district. This is a journey through Foshan's past and future.

When we talk about Foshan, martial arts, ceramics, and double-skin milk usually come to mind. However, the cultural depth of this historic Lingnan water town goes far beyond that. Today, we step away from the traditional Zumiao (Ancestral Temple) and Qinghui Garden, taking you deep into Foshan's Nanhai, Sanshui, and Gaoming districts to find overlooked cultural treasures and vibrant creative spaces.

A 600-Year Water Legend: Yanbu Old Dragon Boat

Our first stop is Yanbu in the Dali Town of Nanhai District. Hidden here is an intangible cultural heritage legend that makes all Lingnan people proud: the Yanbu Old Dragon Boat. As the oldest dragon boat in China, its history dates back to the Xuande era of the Ming Dynasty, making it nearly 600 years old. Every year during the Dragon Boat Festival, the "visiting relatives" ceremony between the Yanbu dragon boat and the Pantang dragon boat from Guangzhou is incredibly lively and touching. Even outside the festival, you can feel the strong dragon boat culture and clan cohesion unique to Lingnan water towns within the Yanbu community.

A Gem of Northern Emperor Worship: Sanshui Lubao Temple

Leaving Nanhai, we head northwest into the Sanshui District to visit the Lubao Ancestral Temple, which is as famous as the Foshan Ancestral Temple. Built during the Southern Song Dynasty, this temple complex primarily worships the Northern Emperor (Beidi). Unlike the bustling attractions in the city center, the Lubao Temple offers a sense of tranquility and rustic charm. The most spectacular part of the architecture is its roof and wall decorations—exquisite stone carvings, wood carvings, and colorful Shiwan pottery sculptures (Huisu) that showcase the pinnacle of ancient architectural art. The Lubao River flowing quietly in front of the temple adds a touch of spiritual energy.

An Industrial Renaissance: Ronggui Fisherman's Wharf

In the afternoon, we drive to the Ronggui subdistrict in southern Shunde. The Ronggui Fisherman's Wharf is one of Foshan's most successful urban renewal projects in recent years. This area was once the old factories and docks of the Shunde Food Import and Export Company. Today, the massive abandoned granaries are covered in vibrant graffiti, and the old factories have been transformed into stylish cafes, craft beer bars, and private kitchens. As evening falls and the iconic red-and-white lighthouse lights up, grab a cup of bubble tea, stroll along the Desheng River promenade, and watch the sunset turn the river golden—it's incredibly romantic.

A Green Oasis for Families: Gaoming Yingxiang Ecological Park

On our final day, we visit the Yingxiang Ecological Park in the Gaoming District. This is a large comprehensive scenic area that perfectly combines natural ecology with amusement rides. Every autumn, hundreds of acres of flowers (such as spider flowers and sunflowers) bloom spectacularly. The park also features the "Lingyun Feidu" glass bridge spanning two mountains; walking on it allows you to overlook the lush forests of Gaoming. If you're traveling with children, the water park and wide variety of amusement rides here guarantee a weekend full of laughter for the whole family.

實用交通及通關指引 (Transit & Border Guide)

These four attractions are located in four different districts of Foshan (Nanhai, Sanshui, Shunde, Gaoming), covering a vast geographical area. Renting a car in Foshan or Guangzhou is highly recommended to save travel time. If relying on public transport, Ronggui Fisherman's Wharf can be reached by taking Foshan Metro Line 3 and transferring to a bus.

小編在地避坑貼士 (Curator Insider Tips)

The best time to see the Yanbu Old Dragon Boat is around the Dragon Boat Festival when grand folk activities take place. The river view sunset at Ronggui Fisherman's Wharf is very popular; aim to arrive around 5 PM. Yingxiang Ecological Park is huge; if you want to experience all the rides and the water park, allocate a full day and bring sun protection.
