Water Towns & Gothic Domes: Classical Shunde and Historic Guangzhou
From Qinghui Garden's Manchu Windows to the Sacred Heart Cathedral

On the Lingnan delta, the elegance of classical Chinese gardens and the grandeur of Western Gothic architecture miraculously coexist. This route from Shunde to Guangzhou offers a visually striking cultural contrast.
The true charm of the Greater Bay Area lies not just in its economic boom, but in its profound cultural inclusivity. Traditional Lingnan water towns and Western religious architecture brought via the Maritime Silk Road are immaculately preserved here. Take two days to experience this fascinating dialogue between East and West.
Shunde: Exquisite Gardens & Gentle Waterways
In Shunde, the UNESCO City of Gastronomy, you must explore its classical gardens between meals. Located in Daliang, Qinghui Garden tops the list of Guangdong's Four Great Gardens. Unlike the subtle gardens of Jiangnan, Qinghui is compact, dynamic, and vividly colorful. Sunlight streams through stained-glass Manchu windows onto grey brick floors, while rockeries, pavilions, and ancient trees reflect the ultimate aesthetic pursuit of Qing Dynasty merchants.
Leaving the urban center, drive to Xingtan Town to visit Fengjian Water Town, often dubbed the "Zhouzhuang of Guangdong." The village is a network of waterways crossed by ancient stone bridges. Hiring a traditional wooden awning boat is highly recommended. Listening to the rhythmic paddling as you glide beneath ancient banyans and past heritage homes is magical. Afterwards, stop at a waterside cafe for authentic Shunde Double-Skin Milk—a rare slice of true "slow living" in the GBA.
Guangzhou: The Notre-Dame of the Far East
After the tranquil water town, take the high-speed rail or metro back to Guangzhou's Yuexiu District for a completely different visual shock: the Sacred Heart Cathedral (Shishi). Built over 25 years, it is one of only four all-granite Gothic churches in the world, on par with Notre-Dame de Paris. Every block of granite was transported from Kowloon, Hong Kong, and assembled by French architects and Guangdong stonemasons. Stepping beneath its soaring vaulted ceilings as afternoon light filters through the magnificent rose windows brings a sense of sacred serenity, making you completely forget the bustling metropolis outside.
In Shunde, use Foshan Metro Line 3. Fengjian Water Town is slightly remote; taking a taxi from Daliang is best. For Guangzhou's Sacred Heart Cathedral, take Metro Line 6 to Yide Road Station and walk.
Rent an audio guide at Qinghui Garden to fully appreciate the architectural details. When visiting the Sacred Heart Cathedral, dress modestly (no shorts, slippers, or sleeveless shirts) and maintain silence.
