Foshan's New Face: Qiandeng Lake to Zaomu Mountain
Beyond Kung Fu: Discovering the modern and ecological heartbeat of this manufacturing hub
There is more to Foshan than Wong Fei-hung and Wing Chun. As the city evolves, places like Nanhai's Qiandeng Lake, Gaoming's Zaomu Mountain, and Sanshui's Lotus World showcase a modern, green, and vibrant new facade.
When people mention Foshan, they usually think of incense at the Ancestral Temple, Wong Fei-hung's martial arts, or the flames of the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln. But beyond its profound history, Foshan has transformed into a metropolis of modernity and ecological aesthetics. This time, we skip the traditional old town to explore Foshan's new landmarks and natural retreats.
The City's Modern Living Room: Qiandeng Lake
We start in Nanhai District, the most economically active area of Foshan. Qiandeng Lake Park (Lake of a Thousand Lanterns) is the "city's living room" and the best microcosm of Foshan's modernization. By day, it is a vast expanse of water and green spaces surrounded by chic skyscrapers and five-star hotels. But at night, it truly shines—a thousand creatively designed landscape lights turn on simultaneously. Reflecting off the lake alongside neon building lights, a stroll here offers a modern metropolitan romance rivaling the Shanghai Bund.
Topping the Peak of Foshan: Zaomu Mountain
Leaving the bustling city, we drive west to the Zaomu Mountain Scenic Area in Gaoming District. At 804.5 meters above sea level, it is hailed as the "Highest Peak in Foshan." Climbing the winding trails, you are flanked by dense original secondary forests. If you reach the top in the early morning or after rain, you have a high chance of seeing a spectacular sea of clouds. Standing on the summit's observation deck, overlooking the rolling green mountains below, makes this the perfect weekend lung-cleansing retreat for urbanites.
Ecology and Carnival: Lotus World & Chuanlord Manor
Foshan's eco-tour features not just mountains, but also beautiful waters. Sanshui Lotus World is currently the largest lotus ecological park in the world with the richest variety of species. If you visit in mid-summer, the endless stretch of green lotus leaves and bright red flowers is visually stunning. Finally, if you want to add some thrills and laughter to the trip, the Chuanlord Tourism & Leisure Manor in Shunde is the perfect choice. This 5A-rated attraction perfectly combines Lingnan water town farmhouse vibes with giant roller coasters, making it the ultimate playground for kids to burn off energy.
Qiandeng Lake is downtown and easily reached by taking the Guangfo Metro Line to "Qiandeng Lake Station." Zaomu Mountain is remote and requires hiking; driving to Gaoming and parking at the base is strongly advised. Sanshui Lotus World can be reached by local bus or taxi. Chuanlord Manor in Shunde is connected by shuttle buses and intercity rail.
The night lights at Qiandeng Lake are usually on from 7 PM to 10 PM, with water fountain shows on some weekends. Climbing Zaomu Mountain requires good stamina; wear hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. Chuanlord Manor is extremely crowded on weekends; buy a VIP fast-pass ticket for popular rides.
