Foshan Craftsmanship: From Golden Mansions to Shiwan Kilns
Beyond martial arts, discover Lingnan's finest crafts and hidden ecological parks
Mention Foshan, and Wong Fei-hung comes to mind. But this city is also the pinnacle of Lingnan folk crafts. Visit the gold-leafed Bijiang Mansion, admire the Shiwan ceramic figures, and retreat to the lush Nanhai Bay and Sanshui Forest Park.
Foshan is the hometown of Wing Chun and the famous "Shadowless Kick," but martial arts are just one facet of the city. As one of China's four famous towns during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Foshan accumulated profound commercial and handicraft heritage. On this journey, we step away from the Kung Fu narrative to appreciate Foshan's breathtaking traditional crafts and its green sanctuaries.
Ultimate Luxury: Bijiang Golden Mansion
Our first stop is the Bijiang Golden Mansion in the Shunde District. This Qing Dynasty library building is famous for one thing: its wooden furniture, doors, windows, and screens are entirely covered in pure gold leaf. Walking into this two-story building, the dazzling gold creates a shocking visual impact. Craftsmen carved incredibly intricate birds, flowers, and mythological stories into the wood, showcasing the highest level of Lingnan wood carving. Legend has it that Empress Dowager Cixi's goddaughter married into this family, adding a legendary touch to this century-old mansion.
The Southern Pottery Capital: Shiwan Ceramics Museum
Leaving Shunde, we head to Shiwan in the Chancheng District. There is an old saying: "Shiwan tiles are the best under heaven." Next to the 500-year-old Nanfeng Ancient Kiln lies the Shiwan Ceramics Museum. Unlike the porcelain of Jingdezhen, Shiwan pottery is famous for its thick glazes and highly vivid character figurines. Inside the museum, you can see lifelike statues of Bodhidharma and Guan Yu, as well as micro-carvings as small as grains of rice. These artworks, carrying the warmth of the earth, perfectly embody the craftsmanship of Foshan people.
Guangdong's Jiuzhaigou: Nanhai Bay Forest Eco Park
After admiring the crafts, we turn to nature to relax our eyes. We drive to the Nanhai Bay Forest Eco Park in Xiqiao. Locals call this the "Little Jiuzhaigou of Guangdong." A crystal-clear stream runs through the valley. You can hike up the boardwalks alongside the stream, breathing in the high concentrations of phytoncides. There are many shallow pools perfect for splashing around, making it a summer paradise for families. At the end of the trail, the spectacular Yinxi Waterfall cascades down, leaving you completely refreshed.
The World's Largest Reclining Buddha: Sanshui Forest Park
Our final destination is Sanshui Forest Park in the northwest. This is a leisure destination that blends religious culture with natural scenery. The park's most famous attraction is the world's largest reclining Buddha stone carving, stretching an impressive 108 meters along the mountain. Besides the Buddha, the park also houses the largest Confucius Temple in South China. Strolling here among the lakes and mountains, listening to the melodious temple bells, your tired body and mind will find absolute peace.
Bijiang Mansion is in Shunde and accessible by the Foshan Metro. The Shiwan Ceramics Museum is in downtown Chancheng. Nanhai Bay Eco Park and Sanshui Forest Park are further out in the suburbs; renting a car or taking a taxi is highly recommended.
Though Bijiang Mansion is small, the wood carving details are immense; taking a guided tour is recommended. When hiking in Nanhai Bay in summer, wear slip-resistant shoes and bring a change of clothes for kids. Please remain quiet and respectful when visiting the Reclining Buddha and Confucius Temple.
