Cannons and Coasts: From Historic Dongguan to Shuangyue Bay

Dongguan and Huizhou offer a fascinating contrast between profound history and stunning ecology. Visit the frontline forts of the Opium War, wander through Ming Dynasty villages, and escape to the breathtaking cliffside boardwalks of Shuangyue Bay.

When people think of Dongguan and Huizhou, they often label them simply as "factories" and "beaches." However, these neighboring cities hold deep historical heritage and world-class ecological wonders. This is an epic journey from heavy history to the open ocean.

Dongguan: The Dawn of Modern Chinese History

The journey begins in Humen Town, Dongguan. This is where the destruction of opium sparked the Opium War. Standing on the massive, weathered walls of the Humen Naval Battle Museum and Weiyuan Fort, you can touch century-old iron cannons. Right above your head is the colossal Humen Pearl River Bridge, a modern mega-infrastructure marvel. This juxtaposition of a scarred history and modern engineering is deeply moving.

Leaving the coastal fort, head inland to Chashan Town to visit the Nanshe Ming & Qing Ancient Village. This 800-year-old village seems completely frozen in time. Walking on the red stone pavements, you are flanked by immaculately preserved ancestral halls and residences. The intricate wood carvings and the reflection of ancient banyan trees in the central pond reveal a tranquil, rustic side rarely associated with this industrial city.

Huizhou: The Double-Moon Miracle

Driving east from Dongguan brings you to the Pinghai Peninsula in Huizhou, home to Guangdong's most unique coastal landscape: Shuangyue (Double-Moon) Bay. Due to its geography, the bay is formed by two crescent-shaped beaches placed back-to-back. It is highly recommended to take a local motorcycle taxi up to the Daxing Mountain Observation Deck. From this vantage point, you will marvel at nature's magic: the eastern bay features roaring, turbulent waves, while the western bay is as calm as a mirror.

Descending the mountain, you arrive at Sea Turtle Bay, China's only sea turtle nature reserve. Aside from its ecological importance, it features the "most beautiful coastal boardwalk" built right on the cliffs. The contrast of crystal-blue water crashing against black volcanic rocks makes every photo look cinematic. End your day at the nearby cliffside Reef Bar with a cocktail as the sun sets over the ocean.

實用交通及通關指引 (Transit & Border Guide)

Attractions in Dongguan are spread out; driving or taking taxis is recommended. The drive from Dongguan to Shuangyue Bay takes about 2 hours. Traffic in Shuangyue Bay can be very congested during peak season; renting a local e-bike or scooter is the best way to get around, especially to Daxing Mountain.

小編在地避坑貼士 (Curator Insider Tips)

The Humen Naval Battle Museum requires strict real-name advance booking via WeChat. The boardwalk at Sea Turtle Bay offers zero shade, so apply plenty of sunscreen and bring a hat during summer.
